Your Weight-Loss Weapon of 2014

You started your new year off with high expectations to get in better shape, you told yourself you’d lose weight, but you’ve only been to the gym a handful of times since January 1st and you’re not making the progress you planned for. Maybe it’s time to revise your weight-loss strategy. My weight-loss weapon of choice allows you to perform your cardio anytime and anywhere. You don’t even have to leave your home!

Never underestimate the power of the jump rope!

The benefits of jump-roping include:

  • interval training- one of the most important weight-loss methods
  • low impact exercise- to protect your joints and avoid injury
  • cost-effectiveness- I found mine at Target for $6!
  • portability- it fits easily in your purse, backpack, and luggage, making it easy to take it with you everywhere
  • improves coordination-enough said
  • provides noticeable weight-loss results quickly when combined with proper eating habits

How to Jump-Rope

  • stay on the balls of your feet
  • keep your jumps small
  • keep your arm movement minimal
  • select the proper length-if you stand on the middle of the rope, then the handles should line up with your sternum
  • keep your hands just above your waist
  • find a manageable rhythm- beginners should hop(e) for 60-90 revolutions every 60 seconds
  • Practice Makes Perfect

Beginner Jump Rope Circuit Routine

  • Using both feet at the same time, hop for 20-30 seconds (I suggest using a stopwatch or a timer)
  • Rest for 30-60 seconds
  • Repeat 10 times
  • If you don’t have a timer, then jump for 50 revolutions and rest until you can feel your heart-rate slow down
  • Progress either the length of your intervals or the number of intervals, but never both at the same time
